Sunshine House
Community Drop-In & Resource Centre ยท Winnipeg ยท Treaty 1
Harm reduction and social inclusion in Winnipeg โ welcoming people exactly as they are since 1983.
Supported and celebrated by Club 200 โ Winnipeg's proudly gay, Indigenous-owned community since 1988.
A Name With Meaning
Sunshine House traces its roots to 1983, when a group of Winnipeggers came together to care for Brian Taylor โ the thirteenth person to die of AIDS in Manitoba. Through the crisis years of the '80s and '90s, volunteers and advocates trailblazed harm reduction practices across the city.
In 1999, the organization found a home drop-in space and chose to name it Sunshine House โ in honour of Dione Sunshine, an Indigenous trans woman who was dying of AIDS at St. Boniface Hospital at the time. Her name lives on in every meal served, every referral made, every person welcomed exactly as they are.
In 2006, Sunshine House found its permanent home at 646 Logan Ave. Today it operates one of Winnipeg's most vital networks of harm reduction and social services โ including Manitoba's first supervised drug consumption site, and a transitional residence specifically for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
